Rinosporidiosis

Papilloma

 Fig.51-A1 Rhinosporidiosis
In this case a tumor-like swelling is found in the conjunctiva.

 Fig.51-B1 Papilloma
A 40 years old busseman from Mérida Venezuela shows a small tumor of the inferior lid which did grow slowly.
|
 Fig.51-A2 Rhinosporidiosis
Histologically in the HE stain of the resected tumor a sporangium and several trophic cells of the fungus can be observed. A trophic cell shows a central nucleus. With this magnification the typical structures of the endospores in the sporangium with their internal corpuscles can not be seen. They are easily recognized in the fig. 51-A3.

 Fig.51-B2 Papilloma
Histologically a benign papilloma has been found.
|
 Fig.51-A3 Rhinosporidiosis
With high power the endpspores in the sporangia show the typical internal bodies. HE stain.

 Fig.51-B3 Papilloma
The slide of this case was sent to us from India for consultation. It was thought that the large cyst with endospore-like bodies could be a sporangium of Rhinosporidium seeberi in the case of a perianal fungus infection. Cases of this kind have been published in the literature. Apparently no sporangium is present, because the internal bodies of this cyst-like structure do not show the typical endospores as shown in one of our pictures. This means that in this case no Rhinosporidiosis with an anusual localization can be diagnosed.
|
 Fig.51-A4 Rhinosporidiosis
A singular large fungus cell of the trophic form with a central nucleus is an immature cell of R. seeberi. The mature form, the sporangium, the other type, the cyst-like one, with numerous endospores will be shown in the fig. 51-A3.

 Fig.51-A5 Rhinosporidiosis
Under high power the ruptured membrane in the periphery of the sporangium can be observed with the endospores leaving the large cyst-like cell.
