Abstract
El objetivo de este trabajo es conocer la imagen de las comunidades
indígenas presentadas en las películas venezolanas entre 1968 y 1998, con el
fin de precisar la representación de estos grupos étnicos a partir de la definición
de “identidad nacional”, y especialmente desde sus luchas por el derecho a la
supervivencia cultural y étnica y a la autodeterminación. Es importante recordar
que durante la primera gestión presidencial de Rafael Caldera (1969-1974), se
implementó en el país una “nueva política indigenista” como parte del modelo
económico desarrollista aplicado por este gobierno, denominada la conquista del
Sur, que a su vez permitió una aproximación etnográfica y socioantropólogica
a las comunidades indígenas, por parte de diversos cineastas formados en
Venezuela y el exterior. Este artículo presenta un inventario preliminar de
esta filmografía, para luego realizar el análisis de contenido de una muestra
representativa del cine de ficción venezolano de temática indígena, con el fin
de conocer la representación de estas poblaciones en el imaginario audiovisual
venezolano. Los filmes analizados son Cubagua (Michael New, 1987); Jericó
(Luis Alberto Lamata, 1991); y En Territorio Extranjero (Jacobo Penzo, 1993).
En general, estas películas realizadas por cineastas de origen no indígena,
presentan una imagen romantizada de estos grupos étnicos.

| Resumen en otro Idioma | The purpose of this paper is to know the image of the indigenous communities in the Venezuelan cinema between 1968 and 1998, in order to precise the representation of these ethnics groups since the definition of “national identity” in contemporary Venezuela, especially since the indigenous people’s struggles for their cultural and ethnic survival and their self-determination. It is important to remember that at the beginning of Rafael Caldera’s first period in office (1969-1974), it was implemented in the country a “new indigenous policy”, in the midst of the economic developist model applied for this government, named the South conquest, which also allowed a new ethnographic and socio-anthropological approach to the indigenous communities, from different filmmakers formed in Venezuela and overseas. This paper presents a preliminary film inventory of this filmography and then an analysis of a representative sample of the Venezuelan fictional cinema that portrays the indigenous peoples, in order to know the representation of this population in the current Venezuelan “audiovisual imagery”. The analized films are Cubagua (Michael New, 1987), Jericó (Luis Alberto Lamata, 1991), and En Territorio Extranjero (Jacobo Penzo, 1993). In general, these films made by non indigenous filmmakers show a romantic image of these ethnic groups. |
