Abstract
En este artículo se describe y analiza la curiosa experiencia de presidiaria, paciente,
trabajadora y fuente de ingresos, vivida por mujeres venezolanas en algunos hospitales del país,
especialmente en los de Caracas, durante el período gubernamental de Antonio Guzmán Blanco,
1870-1888. De manera especial se resalta la función social cumplida por las nodrizas en una
época en la cual existía un elevado número de madres incapacitadas para amamantar a sus hijos y
sin disponer de leches maternizadas o de cualquier otro tipo de alimento tolerado por el
organismo del recién nacido.

Therefore, in this special fashion, we stress the social role fulfilled by wet nurses in a time where a high number of mothers unable to breast-feeding their children persisted; and without the possibility to count on infant formula or other sort of adequate food for the newborns organism. |
