| es_VE |

dc.description.abstract1 | The effect of lambing type (single or twin), and suckling on the macroscopic uterine involution (IU) of 30 West African nonwool sheep (WA) was studied. The animals lambed in the principal season (May-June) and were located in a very dry tropical forest farm grazing on star grass pasture (Cynodon nlemfuensis). The ewes were divided into three groups, G-1: 12 suckling ewes with one lamb; G-2: 12 suckling ewes with twins and, G-3: 6 non suckling ewes. G-1 y G-2 were slaughtered, one each, at parturition (0 day), 3,7 and 14 days following lambing and, then every two days until 30 days postpartum. G-3 ewes were slaughtered 0, 7, 14, 18, 22 and 26 days postpartum. The reproductive tract was removed and the length of the fallopian tubes (from the os uterus to the uterotubal junction), diameter of the fallopian tube, cervix, uterine body and caruncles were measured. The follicles and corpus luteum were observed. Data was analyzed using non-lineal polynomial regression. In G-1 a great difference was observed in the diameter and the length of fallopian tubes between the pregnant and non pregnant ewes which was still observable two weeks pospartum (69% and 58% with respect to original width and length respectively). By 22-26 days IU was stabilized and return to normal compared with nonpregnant uterus was completed at 28-30 days; the same was observed with the diameter of cervix, fallopian tubes and caruncles. IU time for G-2 and G-3 were statistically similar to G-1 although it occurred a little later. The ovarian activity was earlier in G-1 and G-3 but neither birthing nor suckling affected IU, which did not appear to be a limiting factor in reinitiating ovarian function. In WA non-wool sheep, IU follows the same pattern as that observed in wool ewes. | es_VE |
