dc.description.abstract | Objetivo: Evaluar las tasas de mortalidad materna (M.M.), causas, tendencias, factores obstétricos y de atención de salud relacionados para plantear alternativas dirigidas al logro de una atención obstétrica más efectiva. . Método: Estudio descriptivo, retrospectivo, epidemiológico, analítico de las muertes maternas ocurridas en el Instituto Autónomo Hospital Universitario de Los Andes durante el período de 1974-2005, en el cual hubo 178 muertes maternas y 183.288 nacidos vivos. Ambiente: Departamento de Obstetricia y Ginecología del Instituto Autónomo Hospital Universitario de Los Andes. .Resultados: La tasa de mortalidad materna global fue de 97,11 por 100 000 nacidos vivos. Las principales causas de muerte fueron: trastornos hipertensivos del embarazo 39,60%, hemorragia 32,22% e infecciones de punto de partida ginecológico en 26,17%. Entre los factores epidemiológicos, la procedencia del medio rural (57,87%) y la edad materna entre 25-39 años (46,74%) representaron el mayor porcentaje. Desde el punto de vista obstétrico destacó el número de gestaciones mayor o igual a tres embarazos (44,95%); edad de embarazo mayor o igual a 37 semanas (32,02%); muerte en estado postcesárea (44,94%). El lapso de ingreso al hospital hasta la muerte fue menor de 24 horas en el 50,59%, y mayor de 48 horas en un 30,33%. Se realizó autopsia sólo al 36,52%. Conclusión: Las tasas permanecen elevadas con tendencia a mantenerse altas, con predominio de los trastornos hipertensivos del embarazo y las hemorragias como principales causas; lo que implica una amplia estrategia en prevención dirigida a disminuir las muertes maternas. | es_VE |

Method: Descriptive, retrospective, epidemiological, and analytical study of the maternal deaths ocurred in the Autonomous Institute University Hospital of The Andes during 1974-2005, in which there were 178 been born maternal deaths and 183,288 alive ones. Setting: Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Autonomous Institute Autonomous Hospital University of The Andes. Results: The rate of global maternal mortality during period studied was of 97.11 by living newborn. The main causes of death were the hypertensive upheavals of pregnancy 39.60%, hemorrhage 32.22% and infections of departure point gynaecology in a 26,17%.
