Resumen en otro Idioma | Despite recent attempts to theoretically support the territorial focus of rural development, we still do not have a theory of the links between the level of competitiveness of the firms, the competitiveness of different territorial levels, and the economic growth and its effects. It is undeniable that by identifying the possible causal links between these processes, the actual construction of development agendas and in particular, rural development, could be oriented. In light of the advancement of market globalization processes and the opening of national economies, the achievements of competitiveness of the sub national territories have been converted to an indispensable component in the current agendas of rural development at the international level. However, how is this objective related with other possible rural development ends? Is territorial competitiveness always compatible with economic growth, social equity and environmental sustainability? The objectives of this article are to advance in the construction of a theory of territorial competitiveness and analyze the dilemmas implicit in the design and implementation of the current rural development agendas. |
