Resumen en otro Idioma | In 1929, a group of military men, young and intellectual people from the generation of 1928, led by Roman Delgado Chalbaud, landed in the port of Cumana with the intention of overthrowing Juan Vicente Gomez’s government. They were defeated by the repression forces of the dictator in just a few hours. This episode clearly refl ects the closure of the invasion and insurrection cycle, led by caudillos, which had been imposing such whimsical dynamic politics in the country during the 19th century. Thus, trying to analyze the symbolical content of this historical event, chosen by Federico Vegas for his novel Falke (2004), we have decided to go through the meaning and sense behind the failed attempt to overthrow Gomez, as the central point of the narration using the testimonial register as a tool to represent and recreate the last years of the dictatorship of Gomez expressed by Rafael Vegas, the main character of the novel and one of the members of the Falke expedition. This study is used as the starting point for a reading of the country that emerges from the defeat of the Falke, thus projecting, to a transcendental dimension, connotations that go further of the mere historical context of the anecdote and serve as example for a feasible reading of the country in our present day. |
