Abstract
El presente estudio es un intento por analizar una de las instituciones más relevantes del periodo colonial inicial merideño: la encomienda, desde la fundación de la ciudad con los primeros repartimientos del Gobernador y Capitán General del Nuevo Reino de Granada, Andrés Venero de Leiva en 1564; su valoración y nuevas asignaciones de indios a sus antiguos o nuevos encomenderos, con la visita de Antonio Beltrán de Guevara, en 1602; pasando por la reorganización de la encomienda merideña realizada en 1619 por el visitador Alonso Vásquez de Cisneros; para finalizar con algunas aproximaciones a la
situación de la institución en 1636, en torno a la efímera actuación de la visita de Francisco de La Torre Barreda. Además, vincularemos la encomienda a un conjunto de intereses y prácticas sociales, que conllevaron a la conformación por parte de los encomenderos, de importantes redes familiares y control del poder político.

| Resumen en otro Idioma | This research has been done with the aim of analyzing one of the most important institutions during the very early Spanish colonization in Mérida: the encomienda. This trusteeship labour system will be studied from the foundation of the city of Mérida with the assessment of the first encomiendas granted by the Governor-General of the New Kingdom of Granada, Andrés Venero de Leiva in 1564 until the period when the new encomiendas of natives were granted to their old and new encomenderos during the visit of Antonio Beltrán de Guevara in 1602. Besides, the encomienda in Merida, reorganized by the visitor Alonso Vásquez de Cisneros in 1619 will be analyzed in this study, and before concluding, some approaches to the situation of this trusteeship labour system in 1636, based on the fleeting intervention of the visit of Francisco de La Torre Barreda, will also be discussed. The encomienda will be associated with a group of interests and social habits and due to those interests, important encomenderos’ family networks, who took control of the political power, were created. |
