New Developments in Tectonics: Do the Use of Remote Sensing, Digital Elevation Model and Geographical Information System will Change the Geological World?
The recent improvement in computer science and GIS-based 3D representation of the Earth crust, open the possibility to the structural geologist to better understand natural deformation process. Thus, structural geology face new challenges as it becomes possible to built 3D model of the Earth, taking into account dense dataset from different geosciences specialized field (like seismic data, sismotectonics data…). In this talk, we will first define how the use of satellite imagery and Digital Elevation Model can help the mapping of geological structure. At this point we will focus on a very usefull free mapping tool, Generic Mapping Tool (from The SOEST laboratory from the University of Hawaii). It will be possible then to focus on different applications of this new kind of tectonic studies.
