The central area of research of the group is the optimization of production on plantations and in natural forests with silvicultural treatment. Short term optimization, during processing on plantations, corresponds to the area of silviculture while medium and long term optimization corresponds to the genetic area, principally in relation to the acquisition of enhanced seeds. The quantification of production corresponds to the discipline of forestry measurement (forestry and inventory). The group undertakes the production of timber on plantations and in natural forests, including the obtainment and production of high quality seeds, genetic enhancement in high-yielding species on plantations, optimization of density regimes (initial spacing and clearing) on plantations, estimations of yields, silvicultural systems, and methods of high tropical forest conversion. Two sub-areas of the group can be distinguished, corresponding to two components: genetics (genetic enhancement) and silviculture. Inside the central area, the following general lines are distinguished: - Production of enhanced seeds. - Introduction of species (including varieties, origins); - Establishment and management techniques of plantations (density regime, site quality, yield estimation); - Timber production under different silvicultural options in mediated natural forests (management units in forest reserves). Inside these general lines exist the following specific lines which correspond, for example, to the projects of ULA-MARNR: - Enhanced seed production in the Forest Reserve of Caparo (CC2-2) - Enhanced seed production in the Forest Reserve of Ticoporo (CT2-2) - Yield evaluation on different types of plantations under diverse management modalities (especially density regimes) in Caparo (CC2-7) - Advisement and consultation (genetic enhancement of pine in Corp. Imataca; yields on pine plantations CVG-PROFORCA).
